Should You Go Bungee Jumping in South Africa? Full Guide
If you’re looking for an EPIC adventure, you need to go bungee jumping in South Africa! It’s one of my favourite memories from my first trip to South Africa (despite not wanting to do it at the beginning) and something you’ll remember for the rest of your life.
Let’s jump right into the details so you can plan your own adventure around South Africa!
Bungee Jumping in Cape Town, South Africa
Chances are, you’re going to be Cape Town at some point during your stay in South Africa. If you’re looking for places to bungee jump nearby, there are a couple of places you can do it – the most notable one being the Bloukrans Bridge bungee in Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay.
It’s about a 6-hour drive from Cape Town, and it is typically done when people go on a road trip along the scenic Garden Route.
Bloukrans Bridge Bungy location here.
I’ll give you a proper rundown of the experience there below, as that’s the bungee jump I did and ……
Bungee Jumping in Western Cape and Eastern Cape
Bloukrans Bridge is your only option when it comes to bungee jumping in the Western Cape! It’s actually situated right on the border of the Eastern and Western Cape.
There aren’t any other options when it comes to bungee jumping in the Western or Eastern Cape but that’s find because Bloukrans Bridge is one of the best options for bungee jumping!
If you’re planning to head along the Garden Route, give yourself enough time to stop and do the bungee jump before you carry on.
Bloukrans Bridge Bungee: The Tallest Bridge Bungee in the World

Did you know that South Africa is home to the tallest bridge bungee in the world?!
I didn’t until I arrived and got a glimpse of the bridge for myself.
The bridge is actually Africa’s tallest bridge and when you do a bungee, you jump from 216m (708ft), free falling for about 10 seconds or so!
You have to be at least 14 years old to do the jump, weigh between 35-150kg (77-330lbs) and the entire experience from start to finish is about 1 hour long.
I recommend wearing comfy clothing (I went with leggings and a hoodie) and closed-toed/secure shoes so they don’t fall off! I did another bungee jump prior to this one in New Zealand and witnessed someone’s shoes fly off so make sure they’re on tight before you jump!
They operate in all weather conditions, except during strong winds and thunderstorms, so you’re pretty much guaranteed that it will go ahead.
Where is the Bloukrans Bridge Bungee?
The Bloukrans Bridge bungy is located at Bloukrans River Bridge, Tsitsikamma, Plettenberg Bay, 6600.
It’s right along the Garden Route, in between the Western and Eastern Cape!
How Much Does it Cost to Do the Bungee Jump?
At the time of writing this post (March 2025), it costs R1,690/$93 USD.
It’s one of the most affordable places to do a bungee jump and was certainly a LOT cheaper than the jump I did in New Zealand.
Photos and videos are NOT included in the cost mentioned above and aren’t written anywhere on their website (I’m assuming because prices for the content change).
I didn’t pay for additional photos or videos because I had a friend take a video when I jumped and that was good enough for me!
When booking, you’ll be instructed to arrive at the jump 1 hour before the slot time, unless you’re the first booking of the day, in which case you should only arrive 30 minutes early (at 9:30am).
Is Bloukrans Bridge Safe?
In short – yes.
It’s operated by the company Face Adrenalin and they have a strong reputation when it comes to safety. They opened the bungee jump in 1997 and there have been THOUSANDS of jumpers who have taken the plunge safely, with no reported fatal accidents. It’s one of the most well-regulated adventure activities in South Africa!
Bloukrans Bridge follows international safety standards and undergoes regular safety inspections by third-party engineers and industry experts. All of the equipment is also maintained and replaced periodically to ensure that it’s reliable for every jumper.
And you’re also secured with a double safety mechanism, which multiple staff members check before you jump to ensure you are all set!
The team itself are all highly trained, with years of experience in adventure sports. They have a rigorous training program to make sure the handling of equipment, customer safety and emergency procedures are at the top of their minds.
While the jump is generally safe for most people, individuals with heart conditions, high blood pressure, epilepsy or anyone who’s had a recent surgery are advised against jumping. Pregnant women are also not allowed to jump for their safety.
I felt safe for the most part during my experience but you can read below for my detailed thoughts on the overall safety of this jump.
My Experience Bungee Jumping in South Africa
@spellboundtravels Facing fears head on ?? #bloukransbungee #bloukransbridge #bungeejumping #adrenalinejunkies #southafricatravel ? SAD GIRLZ LUV MONEY – Remix – Amaarae
I went bungee jumping in South Africa in 2021, when I had only been in the country for a couple of weeks!
It was during a trip along the Garden Route with a group of friends I had made at my hostel. In all honesty, I hadn’t planned on doing the bungee jump because I’d previously been bungee jumping in New Zealand and thought it was going to be a one and done situation for me.
Turns out, my friend signed us all up for the experience at Bloukrans Bridge and when I found out, I decided I might as well go for it!
Getting to the Bridge
Once you arrive, you get strapped into your harness and checked by the team. I had a lot of nervous feelings rushing through my body because I knew what was about to happen but everyone there was incredibly kind and helpful.
Getting to the jumping point on the bridge might be the best part of the experience! You don’t simply walk along the bridge to get there but you zipline across.
It’s included in the price so it feels like you’re getting an extra activity for free which was awesome! It was also a lot of fun and really added to the experience.
The Jump
When it comes to jumping, you’re not given much time to think.
The team will ask if anyone wants to go first and otherwise will organize who goes when so you don’t have to think about it. I was with three other people and I went second or third.
You can watch people jump before you go and there’s a good spot to the side where you can get videos and photos.
When it’s your turn to jump, they get the bottom half of your legs strapped into the bungee and it’s a bit difficult to walk so two team members helped me hop over to the edge …
Remember to Look OUT
If there’s one thing you take away from this, remember to look out to the trees and sky, NOT down!
It’s a stunning view from the top of the bridge but if you look down, it will make it considerably harder to actually jump off.
They count you down and before you know it, you’re flying through the air and the cord will catch you.
I won’t lie – it feels like your heart is going to burst out of your chest but it’s only for a split second and then you’re saved by the cord!
The Scariest Part ..
The worst part for me was getting back up to the bridge after the jump because you don’t get hoisted up by the same bungee cord (like I did in New Zealand).
Instead, someone from their team will come down on another rope to get you.
They will unhook you and hook your harness to their cord and then you both get pulled up together.
The thing is, you’re getting pulled up by about 7 men and it’s hard to believe they’re able to lift up two people hanging from so far below. I was terrified that we were going to drop again the entire way up but the team member with me did his best to distract me.
Getting on top of solid ground was an incredible feeling and I could finally relax a little and reflect on the experience I just had with my friends who had jumped already!
Other Adventure Activities in Cape Town
If you’re looking for another adrenaline rush, you should also try paragliding in Cape Town! It’s not as scary as bungee jumping (perfect if it seems bit much for you) and is also very affordable.
