Average Temperature and Weather Conditions in July

During July, Iceland experiences moderate temperatures, making it an excellent time to explore the country’s diverse landscapes. The average high temperature hovers around 14-17°C, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor activities. Evenings may cool down slightly, with average lows ranging from 9-11°C. While you won’t need heavy winter gear, it’s still advisable to pack some warm clothes, as the weather can change drastically in the course of a day.

Benefits of Visiting Iceland in July

July is undoubtedly a fantastic time to visit Iceland, offering a myriad of benefits for travellers seeking a memorable trip! From warmer temperature to extended daylight hours, here are some compelling reasons why July is the ideal month to explore this stunning Nordic Island!

Good Time for Outdoor Exploration:

July is prime time for outdoor lovers, as the weather is generally pleasant and the landscapes are at their most vibrant. With warmer temperatures and loner daylight hours, you can fully immerse yourself in the breathtaking natural wonders of Iceland.

Enjoy the Warmest Months of the Year:

July marks the peak of summer in Iceland, providing a respite from the colder months. It’s perfect because you can comfortably explore the country without having to consider bundling up in heavy winter gear!

Extended Daylight Hours:

With some of its longest days, you’ll have more time than ever to adventure around iconic destinations like the Golden Circle, Renisfjara beach and the stunning waterfalls along the coast. Embrace the enchanting experience of the midnight sun and surreal beauty of Iceland bathed in a golden glow.

Popular Destinations in Their Prime:

July is considered high season in Iceland and for a good reason! Many popular attractions and destinations, such as the Golden Circle, Snaefellsnes Peninsula and the geothermal wonders of the Reykjanes Peninsula, are easily accessible and at their best during this time of year. You’ll have the opportunity to witness Iceland’s iconic sights in all their glory. While I typically suggest travelling during shoulder seasons to avoid the crowds, I’d make an exception for Iceland because it’s definitely worth seeing in the summer!

Festivals and Cultural Events:

July is a vibrant month in Iceland, with numerous cultural events and music festivals taking place throughout the country. Experience the unique atmosphere of the Secret Solstice Festival, where you can enjoy live music performances in the stunning surroundings of Reykjavik. Immerse yourself in Icelandic culture, music and arts while creating lasting memories.

Minimal Rainfall and Sunny Days:

While Iceland is known for its changeable weather, July tends to have a relatively lower amount of rainfall compared to other months. This means a greater chance of enjoying dry and sunny days, making it perfect for outdoor activities, sightseeing and photography. However, it’s still advisable to pack rain gear and be prepared for occasional showers.

Ideal for Self-Drive Tours and Hiking Trails:

With warmer temperatures, milder weather conditions and longer days, July is an optimal time for self-drive tours and hiking. Embark on epic road trips along the Ring Road, explore the captivating landscapes of the Highlands or hike through picturesque trails like the Laugavegur Trail, offering insane views of the glaciers, valleys and volcanic terrain.

Daylight Hours and Midnight Sun

One of the most magical aspects of visiting Iceland in July is the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Due to its proximity to the Arctic Circle, Iceland enjoys long days during the summer months. In July, the country experiences nearly 24 hours of daylight, providing ample time to explore the breathtaking landscapes at any time of the day or night. This unique experience allows you to immerse yourself in Iceland’s natural wonders and capture stunning photographs bathed in the soft golden hues of the midnight sun!

Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis

Many people visit Iceland with a dream of seeing the Northern Lights for the first time – and I was one of them! Contrary to popular belief, the Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis, are not exclusive to the winter months. In fact, July is one of the months when you can witness this ethereal display of lights in Iceland. Although the phenomenon is less common during the summer months, it can still occur, particularly towards the end of the month.

Remember to keep an eye on the weather forecast day by day, looking for clear nights for the best chance of catching a glimpse of the dancing lights among the stars!

Whale Watching and Wildlife

Iceland’s rich marine ecosystem comes alive during the summer months! In fact, that’s what makes it an ideal time for whale watching. Hop on a boat tour along the coast and marvel at the magnificent humpback whales and graceful minke whales as they breach the ocean’s surface. The south coast and Northern Iceland are particularly known for their abundance of marine life, offering a unique opportunity to witness these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

Road Trips

July is prime time for embarking on a road trip in Iceland!

No trip to Iceland is complete without a road trip (in my humble opinion). The country’s famous Ring Road allows you to explore a variety of stunning landscapes, from dramatic mountain roads to tranquil coastal drives. The Golden Circle route, a popular tourist trail, features incredible natural wonders such as the majestic Gullfoss waterfall and the geothermal wonders of Geysir. With the longer daylight hours and favourable weather, July provides the perfect conditions for a self-drive adventure.

South Coast and Snaefellsnes Peninsula

The south coast of Iceland is a must-visit destination, boating breathtaking black sand beaches, towering waterfalls and imposing glaciers. Explore the iconic Reynisfjara beach, witness the power of Skogafoss and Seljalandfoss waterfalls and marvel at the otherworldly beauty of the Jokulsalon glacier lagoon.

Additionally, the Snaefellsnes Peninsula offers a compact version of Iceland’s diverse landscapes, with stunning cliffs, volcanic formations and charming coastal towns.

The Blue Lagoon

If you’re considering a trip to Iceland, you’ve likely heard of or seen pictures of the Blue Lagoon. This famous spa with geothermal waters provides a unique and rejuvenating experience. Immerse yourself in the warm, milky-blue waters that are rich in minerals and renowned for their healing properties. Relax as the heat soothes your body and let the silica mud masks freshen up your skin. The tranquil ambience and stunning surroundings create a truly enchanting experience.

While a trip to the Blue Lagoon is great no matter what, I’d strongly recommend booking a slot during daylight hours! That’s because it’s when you can see the bright blue colour of the water best and is great for getting photos. Bookings are sometimes only available weeks ahead of time so make sure you book ASAP.
